Treat Accessibly is committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance and ability. In fact, it's a core part of our business to help other website owners ensure that their website is accessible.

Measures to support accessibility

Having an accessible website is of prime importance to us. We regularly review our website for accessibility compliance.

Conformance status

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) define the requirements for designers and developers to improve accessibility for people with disabilities. It defines three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA, and Level AAA. Our goal is to conform with WCAG 2.0 level AA.

Whilst we strive to adhere to the guidelines and standards for accessibility, it is not always possible to do so in all areas of the website and we are currently working to improve upon this. Be aware that due to the dynamic nature of the website, minor issues may occasionally occur. We continually seek out solutions that will bring all areas of the site up to the same level of overall web accessibility.

This website has been tested against WCAG 2.0 Level AA and has achieved partial conformance.

Compatibility with browsers and assistive technology.

The website has been tested for accessibility compliance using a Windows 11 laptop with the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, and MS Edge. The website was also tested using an iPhone, an iPad, and an Android phone.

This website is designed to be compatible with the following assistive technologies:

  • Windows + Chrome, MS Edge, or Firefox: NVDA (Free reader)

  • Mac + Safari: Voiceover (Built-in reader)

  • Android + Chrome: Talkback (Built-in reader)

  • iOS + Safari: Voiceover (Built-in reader)

Assessment Approach

We assessed the accessibility of this website using tools from WCAG's Web Accessibility Evaluation Tools List supplemented with manual testing, when applicable. Multiple tools were used in our assessment to increase accessibility testing coverage.

If you have any comments and or suggestions relating to improving the accessibility of our site, please don't hesitate to contact us at founder@treataccessibly.com.  We try to respond to feedback within 3 business days.

Limitations and alternatives

Despite our best efforts to ensure the accessibility of the Treat Accessibly website, there may be some limitations. Below is a description of known limitations, and potential solutions. Please contact us if you observe an issue not listed below.

Known limitations of the Treat Accessibly website:

200% browser zoom:  The navigation menu is slightly cutoff when the browser is zoomed to 200%.  The navigation menu can still be accessed using standard keyboard navigation commands.

Language Menu:  The Language selector menu is defined with a role of "button" when it is a dropdown list.  The element is actionable using keys for a dropdown list (tab, enter, arrow keys, escape).

Photo Galleries: Photo Galleries for past Halloween Villages do not have any alt text assigned to them as they are decorative.

Instagram Posts: Instagram posts displayed on the home page use an app provided by POWR (https://www.powr.io/).  The app does have accessibility limitations including the inability to access individual Instagram posts using the keyboard.  To view our Instagram posts please visit our Instagram page (https://www.instagram.com/treataccessibly/) on your computer or by using the Instagram app on your mobile device.
Instagram posts do not have alt-text defined for images that appear in the posts.

Event Pages: Halloween Village Event pages have a "Show More" button in the "About this Event" section.  This button does not include an aria-expanded attribute to indicate if the section is expanded or not. If that link is actioned that link is still in focus even if there are actionable items (e.g. hyperlinks) that are now displayed in the "About this Event" section.

Colour Contrast

The colour contrast between hyperlinks and the background colour has a contrast ratio of 3.6:1 for people with protanopia (those who are unable to perceive any ‘red’ light) and a contrast ratio of 3.2:1 for people with deuteranopes (those who are unable to perceive any ‘green’ light). A contrast ration of 4.5:1 is required for regular sized text.

The colour contrast between the level 1 Heading on the "How to" page has a contrast ratio of 1.9:1 for people with protanopia (those who are unable to perceive any ‘red’ light) and a colour contrast ratio of 1.7:1  for people with deuteranopes (those who are unable to perceive any ‘green’ light). A contrast ratio of 3:1 is required for large sized text. The heading text reads: "How Can You Help Make Halloween more Accessible?"

Videos: The Accessible name of the play button on french pages (Lire la vidéo) for videos is announced in english (Play Video)
